2004年9月-2005年8月の期間、AA研フィールドサイエンス研究企画センター所属の外国人客員研究員で、MEISプロジェクトのメンバーでもあったアブデルラヒーム・ベンハッダさん（ムハンマド5世大学教授, モロッコ）が貴重な資料を校訂して出版しました。
モロッコとスペインは古くからジブラルタル海峡を介して外交関係を維持してきました。16世紀から19世紀末までモロッコがマドリードに送り出した16人の大使のうち、4人が旅行・滞在記を残しているのですが、そのうち最も古く興味深い報告を著したのが、ここで扱われているアルガッサーニー（派遣期間1690年10月19日-1691年5月29日）です。

スペインのみならず周辺ヨーロッパ諸国の国際関係や歴史に関する洞察、スペイン社会の風俗習慣の観察、イスラームとキリスト教の宗教問題の議論など、当時の文化交流のありさまを生き生きと写し出しています。
本書はアラビア語のテキスト本文と、アラビア語と英語による解説、参考文献、索引からなっています。
ベンハッダさんはモロッコとオスマン帝国、モロッコとスペインなど、地中海地域における国際交流の歴史的発展過程を、文書資料に基づいて実証的に研究してこられました。このたび客員研究員の研究成果の一部として本書が刊行されたのは、私たちにとって大きな喜びです。

なお本書は、1976年以来続いてきたシリーズ Studia Culturae Islamicae の79巻目に当たるとともに、2005年4月から開始された本プロジェクトの研究成果シリーズ(MEIS Series) の第1号という位置付けです。
