[Public Lecture] Rethinking the 1880 Kurdish Uprising in Iran

本講演会では、近代のオスマン＝イラン関係に関する精緻な研究で世界的に知られるサブリ・アテシュ教授をお招きし、1880年に起こった「シャイフ・ウバイドゥッラーの蜂起」に関する最新の研究成果をお話しいただきます。この事件は、オスマン帝国支配下の東部辺境一帯で広い支持を得ていたナクシュバンディー教団の導師シャイフ・ウバイドゥッラー配下の数千人のクルド人が、オスマン帝国側からカージャール朝（イラン）支配下のクルド地域へと侵攻し、一時的にいくつかの都市を掌握したというものでした。19世紀末はクルド民族主義の黎明期でもあったため、この事件もまたそのような文脈で捉えることができるか、これまでも学問的な論争を呼んできました。アテシュ教授はシャイフ・ウバイドゥッラーの書簡を読み解きながら、この問題に対して新たな解釈を提示されます。

The final months of 1880 marked a pivotal moment in Kurdish history. Under the leadership of ʿUbeydullah of Nehrî, a Naqshbandi shaykh operating in Central Kurdistan, thousands of Kurds from both Iranian and Ottoman territories advanced into Iranian Kurdistan, temporarily seizing several cities in the region. Although the uprising ultimately failed, the character of the movement has remained a subject of sustained scholarly debate. This talk offers a contextual analysis of five letters authored by Shaykh ʿUbeydullah, with the aim of illuminating the agency, political consciousness, and motivations of the uprising’s leader. It further examines whether the episode can be meaningfully characterized as a nationalist movement.
