Dr. Ussama Makdisi is Professor of History and Chancellor’s Chair at the University of California Berkeley. His publications include The Culture of Sectarianism: Community, History, and Violence in Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Lebanon (2000), Faith Misplaced: the Broken Promise of U.S.-Arab Relations, 1820-2001 (2010), Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World (2019). He currently serves as president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America and is also known for his numerous conversations with American and Arab intellectuals about Middle Eastern affairs on the podcast “Makdisi Street.”

Dr. Hiroki Okazaki specializes in modern Arab political thought and contemporary Syrian cultural studies. He is Associate Professor in the Faculty of International Relations at Asia University. His publications include The Arab Critique of Despotism in the Modern Age: Between Orientalism and “Orientalism in Reverse” (University of Tokyo Press, 2021), and his translations include Arab Women’s Liberation by Qasim Amin (co-translated with Emi Goto, Hosei University Press, 2024), among others. He is serving as the supervising translator for the forthcoming book Age of Coexistence by Usama Makdisi (Hosei University Press).

岡崎弘樹氏は、アラブ近代政治思想、および現代シリア文化研究を専門とする。亜細亜大学国際関係学部准教授。著書に『アラブ近代思想家の専制批判―オリエンタリズムと<裏返しのオリエンタリズム>の間』（東京大学出版会、2021年）、訳書にカースィム・アミーン著『アラブの女性解放論』（後藤絵美との共訳、法政大学出版局、2024年）ほか。間もなく刊行されるウサーマ・マクディシー著『共存の時代』（法政大学出版局）の監訳も務める。
