The Japan Center for Middle Eastern Studies (JaCMES) was founded in February 2006 in Beirut, the capital of the Republic of Lebanon, with the support of the “Research and Educational Project for Middle East and Islamic Studies at TUFS” (FY 2005–2009), which was carried out by the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA).
JaCMES is the first overseas research center established by ILCAA and is dedicated to serving as an international hub for shared research and academic collaboration. This center was officially authorized by a decision of the Lebanese Council of Ministers on December 15, 2005, and formally opened on February 1, 2006.
Through international collaborative research, JaCMES aims to enhance the global presence of Middle Eastern studies in Japan while building long-term partnerships with researchers and research institutions across the Middle East.
JaCMES carries out the following activities:
JaCMES provides a platform for researchers from Japan, Lebanon, and other countries to work together and advance their research. By supporting joint research projects and facilitating academic exchange, the center contributes to the development of international research networks in the field of Middle Eastern studies.
Ongoing Joint Research Project (April 2025 – March 2028)
Connectivity of migrants and refugees in multiethnic areas (jrp000312)
JaCMES places emphasis on supporting early-career researchers and promoting international exchange in the field of Middle Eastern studies. Through its annual young scholars’ seminar titled “Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies in Japan: The State of the Art,” also known as the “Beirut Seminar,” doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers present their research and engage directly with scholars based in Lebanon and other parts of the Middle East.
To promote broader understanding of the relationship between Japan and the Middle East, JaCMES organizes public lectures, film screenings, and related events that are open to the general public.
